What to Expect at a Newborn Photography Session: When to Book, How to Prepare & What to Know

Bringing home a new baby is one of the sweetest and most fleeting seasons of life. Those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, little yawns, and brand new features change so quickly, which is why newborn photography is something so many families choose to document.

If you're expecting a baby and considering a newborn photography session, you may be wondering: When should I book? What should I bring? Will my baby cooperate? What if my baby cries the whole time?

As a newborn photographer serving Tunkhannock, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Clarks Summit, Dallas and families throughout Northeast Pennsylvania, I'm here to make the process as easy and stress free as possible.

Here's everything you need to know about planning your newborn photography session.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

One of the most common questions I receive is, "When should we book our newborn session?"

The short answer: as early as possible during your pregnancy.

I recommend reaching out around your second trimester or early third trimester but you can never book too early either! We love to get you on the books as soon as we can, some people book when the schedule their maternity announcement photos to make sure their spot is secured.

When you book, we use your due date to reserve a general spot on my calendar. Once your baby arrives, we'll choose the actual session date based on their arrival and my availability. Just send me a message when baby makes their arrival!

Newborn sessions are typically scheduled during the first couple of weeks of life, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses.

That said, there is no magic expiration date on newborn photos! If your baby is a few weeks or even a couple of months old, you can still have a beautiful newborn session. We simply adjust the session to your baby's age, personality, and stage.

Pro tip: If you know you want newborn photos, don't wait until after your baby arrives to reach out. Photographers can only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month, and schedules can fill quickly.

What Age Is Best for Newborn Photos?

For a traditional posed newborn photography session, the first 5–14 days is often ideal.

During this stage, babies tend to:

But every baby is different.

Some babies are amazing sleepers at three weeks old. Others are wide awake and curious from day one. My goal isn't to force your baby into a specific pose or make your session fit a checklist.

Instead, we work with your baby and their needs.

If your baby needs to be fed, changed, rocked, or held throughout the session, that's completely normal.

What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?

If you've never had newborn photos taken before, you may not know what to expect.

The most important thing to know is that there is no need to arrive with a perfectly sleeping baby.

Newborn sessions are intentionally slow and relaxed.

When you arrive, we'll get settled and allow you and baby some time to adjust. From there, we'll move through a combination of carefully posed images, baby led moments, family photos, and all those tiny details you'll want to remember.

Depending on your package and preferences, we may photograph:

And yes, babies cry during newborn sessions! It's absolutely okay and expected.

They also eat, spit up, poop, sneeze, wiggle, and need to be held.

It's all part of having a newborn.

You don't need to apologize if your baby isn't sleeping. That's my job to work around.

How Should You Prepare for Your Newborn Session?

A little preparation can help your session run smoothly, but don't stress about getting everything perfect.

Feed Baby Before Your Session

If possible, plan to feed baby upon arrival to the studio. A nice full belly can help encourage a sleepy baby.

However, if your baby is hungry before you arrive, feed them. Your baby leads the way. If they get hungry during the session, we will absolutely stop for a feeding.

Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove

A simple zip-up or button-down sleeper is perfect.

Avoid clothing that has to be pulled over baby's head if possible. We want to keep baby as comfortable and sleepy as we can.

Bring the Essentials

You don't need to pack your entire house!

A few helpful things include:

And don't worry about bringing blankets, wraps, or props unless you've specifically discussed them with your photographer.

What Should Parents Wear for Newborn Photos?

For family and parent portraits, I typically recommend choosing soft, neutral, timeless colors.

Cream, beige, white, taupe, soft brown, muted blue, and other neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs, on your family.

I also recommend avoiding large logos, neon colors, and very bold patterns.

Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing.

Your newborn photos are going to live in your home for years. Classic, simple clothing tends to stand the test of time beautifully.

What If I Don't Feel “Photo Ready” After Giving Birth?

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear from new moms.

You've just had a baby. You're exhausted. Your body has changed. You're probably wondering how you're possibly supposed to be in front of a camera.

Please know this: you do not need to look perfect to be photographed with your baby.

These photos aren't about having perfect hair, a perfect body, or looking like you just walked out of a magazine.

They're about documenting the person your baby knew first.

The way you held them.

The way they fit against your chest.

The tiny hand wrapped around your finger.

The look on your face when you look at your baby.

Those are the things you'll want to remember.

** Your fingers / hands will most likely be in photos so painting nails or removing chipped polish if you want a natural look can be helpful!

What If We Have an Older Sibling?

Sibling photos are some of my favorites!

But if you have a toddler at home, you probably already know that asking them to "sit still and smile" isn't always a realistic plan.

And that's okay.

We'll keep things relaxed and age-appropriate. Sometimes the best sibling photographs aren't perfectly posed, they're the ones where your toddler is giving the baby a kiss, touching their tiny toes, or simply interacting with them naturally.

If your older child needs a break during the session, we'll work around that too.

I always photography siblings first during my newborn sessions so that if possible, the other parent can leave with their sibling so they do not have to remain for the entire duration of the session. I understand this is not always possible, so in that case I recommend bringing toys and snacks to keep them happy and content.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Newborn sessions typically take longer than a standard family or mini session because babies set the pace.

Instead of rushing through a specific number of poses, we allow time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and settling.

The goal is to create a calm experience for your family, not another appointment where you feel like you're racing the clock.

I usually recommend planning on up to 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography

When should I book newborn photos?

Ideally, reach out during your second or early third trimester. Your due date is used to reserve a general spot, and the exact session date is scheduled after your baby arrives.

How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

Many traditional newborn sessions take place within the first 5–14 days, but beautiful newborn photos can be taken well beyond that window.

What if my baby won't sleep?

That's completely okay! Newborn sessions are flexible and baby-led. We can take breaks for feeding, soothing, and cuddling whenever needed.

Do you provide props and wraps?

Yes! Your photographer should let you know exactly what is provided for your session and what, if anything, you should bring.

Can siblings and parents be included?

Absolutely. Including parents and siblings makes your gallery more meaningful and gives you photographs documenting your entire family during this season.

Do I need professional hair and makeup?

Not at all. Simple, natural styling is beautiful for newborn photos. The focus is on your connection with your baby and family.
